Georgi Parvanov: "The Bulgarian Christmas" does not simply succeed, it enjoys the kind of trust that is very difficult to gain in the wary Bulgarian society today
04.04.2008
By 31 March this year 124 children have been supported with a total BGN 640,000 within the framework of "The Bulgarian Christmas - 2007". This was announced today by President Georgi Parvanov at a ceremony in the Coat of Arms Hall in the Office of the President at 2 Dondukov Blvd., at which the latest information was presented about the funds collected during the last campaign and their use.
A total 61 children have received expensive medicines that are not finances by state structures, the President said. For 46 children with cerebral paralysis and other accompanying diseases additional rehabilitation has been provided. Fourteen children have received support for treatment abroad.
Applications for help were submitted by 46 medical treatment facilities, 162 applications were made by parents of sick children. Medical equipment will be donated to nine regional hospitals – Veliko Turnovo, Lovech, Turgovishte, Razgrad, Silistra, Sliven, Yambol, Pazardjik and Kyustendil, as well as to several university teams – the Clinic of paediatric urology in Pirogov, the Hospital of infectious diseases, the paediatric clinic of Alexandrovska Hospital, and the National Genetic Laboratory. There is the possibility to include additional 10 wards and clinics.
The number of donors is growing with every passing year, the ceiling of the biggest donations is raised, President Parvanov said. The number of small donations also increases every year – BGN 1,500,000 have come from telephone calls and SMS. The donations from BGN 10 to 3,000 are more than all of the previous years’ taken together. These donations exceed BGN 500,000.
All funds received and donated are reported in a special printed brochure. We have tried to account for everything right down to the last lev, we have recorded the names of most of the children, only those especially requested by parents not to be revealed have been withheld, the President pointed out.
Openness and transparency is the main principle in our work on "The Bulgarian Christmas", the head of state said. What we are doing through the initiative does in no way relieve the state institutions and competent bodies of responsibility. We are trying to give a chance, to support and channel the existing enormous potential of solidarity in Bulgarian society, President Parvanov said. The fact that every year we raise BGN 1,000,000-1,500,000 more than in the previous years, shows that the initiative does not simply succeed, but that it enjoys the kind of trust that is very difficult to gain in the wary Bulgarian society today, the head of state stressed.
The President expressed gratitude to the co-organisers - Nova Television and BNT, the media partners from bTV, the dailies Trud and 24 Chassa, BNR, Darik Radio, Radio Atlantic and Radio Focus, to the donors, creative artists performers and who joined the campaign.
The director of the regional hospital in Kurdjali, Dr. Todor Cherkezov, on behalf of the medical treatment facilities which received apparatus for the children, thanked all those who helped, underlining that for the fifth year now an unprecedented investment is made in children’s healthcare. The figures hide many changed human fates and regained maternal smiles, Dr. Cherkezov said.
