In 2006 the charity initiative “The Bulgarian Christmas” helped 89 children and 19 hospital treatment facilities
16.11.2007

A total 19 hospital facilities received medical technology and the treatment of 89 children was supported by “The Bulgarian Christmas” - 2006.

The fourth edition of the campaign, which is at the initiative and under the patronage of President Georgi Paravanov and the first lady Zorka Parvanova, raised BGN 2,605,832. The children suffering from diseases, the medications for which are not financed by the state, were supported with a total BGN 405,832. The purchased medical equipment is in the amount of BGN 2,200,000.

The funds raised in last year’s edition of “The Bulgarian Christmas” supported 35 children, suffering from nephrotic syndrome, fragile bones, chronic renal insufficiency, retinopathies, oncological diseases and infantile cerebral paralysis, as well as from extremely rare diseases. The list of the children was presented by the organisers to the Ministry of Health and included diseases and medicines that are not financed by the state. The treatment of three of the children in the original list was changed and the need for buying medications which the NHIF does not cover, was eliminated.

The generosity of the donors allowed to support the treatment of another 57 children, who were included after submitted applications by their parents and consultations with the attending physicians.

Medicines, operations and rehabilitation were provided for 15 children with chronic renal deficiency, 10 children diagnosed with nephrotic syndrome, 6 children with fragile bones, 24 children suffering from infantile cerebral paralysis, 7 children with retinopathies and 27 children suffering from extremely rare diseases.

A total 29 paediatric wards and clinics received new modern  medical technology – incubators, echographs, monitors and latest generation non-invasive ventilation apparatus. As an emergency case, a transport incubator was donated to the Emergency Medical Care Centre in Sofia and a narcosis apparatus to the Central reanimation of the Pirogov Institute. Incubators, monitors and pulsoximeters were donated to: 2nd MHAT Sofia, MHAT Alexandrovska, MHAT Yambol, Kyustendil, Veliko Turnovo, Silistra, Pazardjik, Karlovo, Dupnitsa, Varna, Stara Zagora, St. Anna MHAT Sofia, University Multiprofile Hospital for Active Treatment (UMHAT) Pleven, Varna, Plovdiv, Sofia, National Cardiology Hospital – Sofia and 2nd University Hospital of Obstetrics and Gynaecology ‘‘Sheinovo”.

The donations of the fourth edition of “The Bulgarian Christmas” went mainly to medical teams in the regional centres, which provides the opportunity to offer qualified care for more children close to their homes.

The new edition of “The Bulgarian Christmas” starts on 1 December this year.
