Georgi Parvanov: The results of "The Bulgarian Christmas" prove that solidarity has become a national cause
15.02.2007
The head of state today invited to a meeting the co-organisers, media partners, participants in the charity concert, representatives of children’s medical treatment facilities and donors of the charity campaign “The Bulgarian Christmas – 2006”.
The President stressed that this is the most successful "Bulgarian Christmas" in a financial respect and thanked for the involvement and contribution of all who supported the campaign.
According to him, the results prove that Bulgarian society shows solidarity which has become a national cause.
The fourth edition of the charity initiative collected BGN 2,580,332 from donations, calls and SMS to BTC and the three mobile operators, as well as BGN 50,000 in the form of medicines. They will go for the support of all the 32 children and 10 clinics announced at the start of the campaign, and the rest of the funds will be distributed among other needy persons.
According to President Parvanov, it would be no overstatement to say that "The Bulgarian Christmas" has its own contribution to the improvement of the quality of Bulgarian healthcare, because the funds collected are invested in high-tech modern equipment, which greatly improves working conditions in the clinics and increases the chances to save newborn and gravely ill children.
It is very important to have such charity initiatives in Bulgarian society, but this does not relieve the state of the duty to fulfil its commitments for the development of children’s healthcare, President Parvanov added.
Dr. Boryana Sluncheva, head of the Neonatology ward at Maichin Dom, said that the purchase of modern medical technology has given doctors the possibility to work more calmly and more confidently and to provide much better care for their small patients, and that in the long run the children are guaranteed a much better quality of life.
Assoc. Prof. Evgenii Genev, chairman of the Bulgarian Paediatric Association, pointed out that the association is a guarantee for the professional and best possible distribution of the donated sums.
He thanked the President, the co-organisers of the campaign and the media, and pointed out that they help people realise that the funds collected are spent transparently, effectively and do a very good job for children’s healthcare.
