President Georgi Parvanov and the first lady Zorka Parvanova visited Maichin Dom maternity hospital

President Georgi Parvanov and his wife Zorka Parvanova today visited the Maichin Dom University Hospital of Obstetrics and Gynecology in Sofia.
The funds collected by "The Bulgarian Christmas" in 2005 also supported the Maichin Dom Hospital. Its Neonatology Clinic received a neonatal respirator, four incubators and four pulsoximeters worth a total BGN 238,141. Last year the clinic provided care for 280 premature infants. There are 10 babies there at the moment. One of them is Angela who weighed only 450 grams at birth. Now she weighs almost 1,200 grams.
“Anyone who sees what we have seen here today cannot but be satisfied and filled with optimism about motherhood and children’s health in Bulgaria,” the first lady Zorka Parvanov said. “I am very impressed with the way in which the doctors and the entire staff here save children’s lives,” President Parvanov added.
“I expect us to exceed what we did in previous years, because I am observing the process and I can see that increasingly more people are involved in it,” Georgi Parvanov said. According to the head of state, “The Bulgarian Christmas” has become a nationwide campaign. “I am greatly impressed with the way in which schools and kindergartens, old people’s homes, theatres and sports clubs have rallied, and, of course, the loyal Bulgarian business is right there where it should be, so that we will probably have a larger sum than in previous years and I sincerely hope that this will indeed be so,” the President said.
Georgi Parvanov noted that "The Bulgarian Christmas" is a public initiative, but it cannot replace the state which must look after healthcare. “We help in individual, severe cases, but we cannot support the renovation of hospital treatment facilities, since we insist on 100% accountability, complete transparency and control, which is realised by the doctors and a specially set up commission,” the head of state added.
