President Georgi Parvanov announced the start of the initiative "The Bulgarian Christmas" during his visit to the National Cardiology Hospital. The President visited the paediatrics clinic, which is equipped with the country’s only echocardiograph of its kind, bought with the funds collected by "The Bulgarian Christmas" 2004. He acquainted himself on the spot with the care for the children currently in the clinic’s reanimation ward.

Speaking before journalists, the President said that what has been achieved with the help of “The Bulgarian Christmas” can only be assessed properly after it has started working and yielding results. President Parvanov reminded that the last two charity initiatives "The Bulgarian Christmas" collected more than BGN 2,500,000, which were spent on the treatment of gravely ill children and the purchase of equipment, which makes the work of doctors much more effective and eases the suffering of the young patients.

Our outdated technology does not allow the Bulgarian physicians to work in the same way as their European colleagues, the head of state said. Donations are the only way to solve the severe problems of some children. The fight for the life of some of them starts right after birth and here I can see children operated on who are getting better by the hour, President Parvanov added. It is well worth giving hope to them and their families, he added.

The head of state underlined that donorship is part of the solidarity which is in the best traditions of the Bulgarian. This should not be underrated and must be maintained, Georgi Parvanov believes.
