“The Bulgarian Christmas 2004” raised more than BGN 1,200,000 for sick children and needy paediatric clinics
01.02.2005

At a meeting in the Coat of Arms Hall in the Office of the President at 2 Dondukov Blvd. in Sofia with the participants in the charity initiative “The Bulgarian Christmas” the final results of the campaign for 2004 were reported. This year the initiative was organised by the Administration of the President, Bulgarian National Television and Nova Television (NTV) with the media partnership of Trud daily, 24 Chassa daily, Pari daily, BNR, Darik Radio and Radio Express.

More than BGN 1,200,000 were collected. Of these - over BGN 651,000 through SMS and telephone calls. BGN 462,292 were paid into the UBB donation account and BGN 47,844 were donated directly for particular cases and medical equipment for the clinics in Sofia and Haskovo.

The campaign culminated in the charity performance at the Ivan Vazov National Theatre, which was broadcast live by both national television stations - BNT and NTV. The peak of telephone calls and SMS was marked during the concert - nearly 190,000. The other two dates on which a significant number of calls were registered were 24 December – 34,776 calls, and 31 December – 22,828 calls.

A second culmination of “The Bulgarian Christmas” was seen on New Year’s Eve. This was due to BNT, which broadcast live the festive New Year’s concert on Battenberg Square. All performers involved in the event supported the initiative and called on the thousands of mainly young people who had gathered in the square to see in the New Year 2005 to do the same.

The funds collected will be used to treat 15 children (aged from 7 months to 18 years), whose diagnoses, fate and hopes were made known to the general public in the course of the campaign. Six clinics will also receive medical equipment and consumables.

“Something else, however, is no less important – in those two years we were able to prove that solidarity is not just a concept worn out with use in politics, but that in the Bulgarian conditions it can be filled with real content”, the President said in his speech during the closing of the campaign.

The head of state thanked the big donors, after which he devoted special attention to “those whose contribution may not be very big in a financial respect,” but which is immeasurable in a moral respect – thousands contributed to the initiative with modest means, such as the 6th grade pupils from School 104 in Sofia, the Simeon I School 150 in Sofia, the trustees of the French Language School, the Food Technologies Secondary School in Peshtera, the 9th grade pupils of the Aprilova Secondary School in Gabrovo, the pensioners clubs in Babovo, Rousse region, Assenevtsi, Pleven region, Doirentsi, Lovech region, pensioners and teachers from all over the country.

President Parvanov also expressed the hope that the Ministry of Finance would respond positively to the request to exempt from VAT the medical equipment which will be bought with the funds from "The Bulgarian Christmas", as well as that tax relief for this type of donations will finally be permanently regulated by Bulgarian legislation.
